Background
Flu season is among us and with the continuing COVID-19 pandemic it is highly recommended that everyone receives their flu shot this year. Harvard Pilgrim has partnered with pharmacies across the country to provide children ages 3-18 flu shots at no extra cost.
Summary
When and where members are covered to get the flu shot
The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends annual flu shots. It is preferred that people receive the shot in the early months of October and November but getting the shot as late as December will still be helpful. The CDC is working round the clock with manufacturers to ensure health care providers have what they need in order to safely give flu shots this year.
Harvard Pilgrim members are covered to receive flu shots from the following health care providers at no extra cost. Members should reach out to their provider or the following clinics to make sure they accept Harvard Pilgrim insurance and will submit a claim:
- Primary care provider or family pediatrician
- Participating MinuteClinics (MA, NH, ME, RI and CT locations only)
- Participating pharmacies (e.g., CVS, Walgreens) for members age 3
and older - Public and community-based clinics
It is important that members also bring their Harvard Pilgrim ID card with them when receiving the flu shot.
Flu shots are extremely important this year
This season, it’s even more important for everyone to get a flu shot. Like the coronavirus, the flu is a respiratory illness. In the U.S., the flu circulates in the fall and winter and this year, at the same time that COVID-19 is still circulating in our communities. A flu shot not only helps prevent people from getting the flu but with fewer sick people, it also helps conserve medical resources.
Employers Next Steps
- Employers should communicate this message with their employees and recommend they double check with their provider or clinic that they accept Harvard Pilgrim Insurance and that a claim will be submitted.
